This historic Burgundian region brings together everything that a waterborne holiday should have: historic towns with distinctive architecture, attractive countryside teeming with wildlife and Michelin starred restaurants which are a gastronomic delight. Charolais beef, freshwater fish, snails, local cheese and Bresse poultry all feature high in local dishes. This marvellous region in central eastern France has a large choice of cruising opportunities, including the Canal du Rhône au Rhin, the Petite Saône, the Grande Saône and the Seille rivers. Rolling hills, wheat fields and flower-filled meadows border these scenic waterways. Cruise gently past scented pine forests, lakes, nesting sites and waterfalls with continuous new sights along the way. The many charming historic towns, a legacy from the region’s former golden age, will provide an opportunity to stop, explore and marvel.  Romanesque monuments, castles and abbeys are complemented by cities of culture, crammed with art treasures and historic relics. Breathtaking Fontenay Abbey, the famous mediaeval hospice at Beaune and the historic city of Dijon, “mustard capital of the world”, may all be on your must-see list.
