The Rhone is an important and majestic river, flowing south down the valley between the Massif Central and the Alps to the east. The scenery is breathtaking, turning gently through lush hillside vineyards, steep cliffs and flower-growing meadows, bringing you in stately fashion to many famous towns and cities. It offers a grand cruising environment with plenty of warm sunshine - a perfect setting for your holiday or vacation afloat.

If your cruise starts at Lyon your itinerary may include a short trip upstream on the Saone, to Chalon sur Saone, which is where photography was discovered and is well worth a visit. The river also divides the city of Lyon – you’ll moor up right in the centre – which contains many important sights of Roman antiquity and is renowned as France’s capital of gastronomy.

The Rhone will then carry you to Avignon, city of the Popes’ Palace, and you’ll be able to see how the river divides here, forming the island which carried the bridge made famous in the song ‘Sous le pont D’Avignon’. The river will carry you gently past Tarascon and Viviers, and on to Arles where it divides to take you east to Marseilles or west to Sete, on the Mediterranean. There will be plenty of stops scheduled here and you should take the excursions to the Camargue region and its unique natural habitat and beauty and visit the world famous wine-growing area – the ‘Cotes du Rhone’ – where there are plenty of opportunities for wine-tasting. The Rhône valley itself is considered to be the cradle of Provençal culture.
