Day 1 — Sunday
Arrival at Fleurey-sur-Ouche
Your guide will collect you from the Hotel Westminster in Paris for transfer by private chauffeured minibus to L’Impressionniste, currently moored at Fleurey-sur-Ouche. Over a delicious and refreshing champagne reception, meet the captain and crew and take time to settle in before your first gourmet dinner on board.
Day 2 — Monday
Cruise to Sainte-Marie-sur-Ouche | Visit to Château du Clos de Vougeot
The first day’s cruise along this enchanting canal also offers a walk or cycle along the towpath. After lunch on board Impressionniste, visit the famed Château du Clos de Vougeot, headquarters of the esteemed Chevaliers du Tastevin who award a special prized label to the finest Côte d‘Or vintages every year. Then, on the way back to Impressionniste enjoy a tour of the cellars and a private tasting of fine Burgundy wines at another long-established domaine.
Day 3 — Tuesday
Cruise to La Bussière | Explore Dijon
After breakfast, enjoy a walking tour of old Dijon, capital city of the Burgundy region. Visit the produce markets, mustard shops and the impressive Notre-Dame de Dijon, a Roman Catholic church, considered to be a masterpiece of 13th-century Gothic architecture. Return to the hotel barge for lunch and a leisurely afternoon cruise to the village of La Bussière sur Ouche and perhaps a walk or bicycle ride.
Day 4 — Wednesday
Cruise to Pont d’Ouche | Discover Beaune
After a short morning cruise, we set off on a drive through the slopes of the UNESCO-listed vineyards of the Côte de Beaune. Here, our expert guide will offer an insight into the production of the region’s finest Premier and Grand Cru wines. We continue to Beaune – the capital of the Burgundy wine country, for a private tour and tasting at the renowned Domaine Chanson. The tour includes its medieval Bastion de l’Oratoire, a 15th century defence tower whose 25-foot-thick walls now maintain the perfect temperature for ageing wine. This is followed by a private gastronomic lunch in the domaine’s chateau.
Afterwards, we visit the fascinating Hôtel-Dieu Hospice with time to explore the town, before returning for a short evening cruise to Pont d’Ouche. Dinner on board.
Day 5 — Thursday
Cruise to Vandenesse-en-Auxois | Excursion to hilltop Châteauneuf
After breakfast, cruise to Vandenesse-en-Auxois, passing grazing white Charolais cattle, rolling hills and picturesque villages, crossing the only aqueduct on the Burgundy Canal. After lunch on board, a visit to the medieval village, craft shops and castle of Châteauneuf-en-Auxois, once an outpost of the Dukes of Burgundy with fine views of the feeder lakes for the canal and the surrounding countryside.
Day 6 — Friday
Cruise to Escommes | Discover Château de Commarin and falconry
The last day’s leisurely cruise is up to the canal summit, 1,250 feet above sea level, just before the Pouilly tunnel. After an early lunch, visit the moat-encircled Château de Commarin to be treated to a private demonstration of the medieval sport of falconry. Afterwards, meet Count Bertrand de Vogue, the current resident, who will give a fascinating insight into the Château’s history and a private tour of the building. Farewell dinner on board.
Day 7 — Saturday
Departure from Escommes
After breakfast, disembark the barge at 10am for transfer back to the Hotel Westminster in Paris.
This itinerary is subject to change and on alternate weeks the cruise is in the reverse direction.
“The cruise was magnificent and could not have gone better…We had a lot of fun with our cruise mates. There is a lot of potential for things not to go so well when you put eight to twelve people in a small box with an open bar for a week, but all went well. We enjoyed all of them and they all seemed to enjoy the company of each other. You folks at French Waterways, the peniche, the crew – everything was so good and so well done that we’re kind of reluctant to consider another cruise at the risk of having a second-best experience!”
