Nantes-Brest Canal ~ Breton+Anjou Canals and Rivers ~ River Loire

Brittany is the traditional homeland of the Breton people and many of the signposts are still written in their old language as well as French. With its rocky coastline, hilly terrain and slate-roofed granite cottages this much loved north-west peninsula is beautifully unspoilt and still relatively unknown compared to other areas of France.

There are two major cruising routes: north to south from Dinan, a delightful must-see market town perched on the hillside above the Canal L’Ile et Rance, running through the 11 lock staircase at Madeline, to Rennes, the capital city of Brittany.

At Redon the canal Nantes a Brest crosses, joining the river Loire at Nantes to Pontivy to the north-west, through the lovely towns of Malestroit and historic Josselin, and then joining the river Blavet which runs south-west to Lorient on the coast.
